Isaac Asimov (1920 - 1992) was one of the most prolific writers ever. He was a scientist and also the author of over 500 published books. His voracious appetite for knowledge extended to almost all areas of humanity and science. He wrote hundreds of non-fiction books and articles on science, history, religion, culture, and humour.
He is best known as one of the most influential and popular science fiction writers ever.
When he gave this speech he was the president of the American Humanist Association.

Earthrise, was photographed by astronauts on Apollo 8 on Christmas Eve 1968. It shows the Earth from 240,000 miles away and the moon 350 miles away.
This image, and others of Earth from space gave a new impetus to the environmental movement and global consciousness. Space imagery and studies have also revealed the consequences of human activity.
